The Monkey-Tailed Skink (also known as the Solomon Island Skink) is one of the most unique and fascinating reptiles on the planet. As the largest species of skink in the world, they are completely arboreal and possess a fully prehensile tail—an "extra limb" they use to navigate the tropical canopies of the Solomon Islands. Unlike most reptiles, Monkey-Tailed Skinks are highly social and live in family groups known as a "circulus," displaying rare maternal and protective behaviors.
These "herbivorous dragons" have a specialized diet consisting almost entirely of leafy greens and fruit. They are known for their striking olive-green scales, dappled with brown or tan "lichen" patterns, and their large, intelligent eyes. Because they are slow-growing and have a low reproductive rate, captive-bred individuals are highly prized by serious enthusiasts. If you are looking for a heavy-bodied, intelligent, and long-lived companion that looks like a prehistoric relic, the Monkey-Tailed Skink is in a league of its own.
