Why Bioactive?

A bioactive vivarium is not just an aesthetic choice — it is the most practical long-term approach to keeping dart frogs. Here is why experienced keepers use it almost exclusively:

  • Self-cleaning: Springtails and isopods break down waste, uneaten food, shed skin, and mold. A healthy bioactive enclosure rarely needs deep cleaning.

Step 1: Choose Your Enclosure

Dart frogs need tall, glass, front-opening enclosures. The front-opening design makes maintenance and feeding easy without disturbing the frogs from above — a direction that triggers their natural predator response.

Before building, cover 75–80% of the screen top with glass or acrylic cut to size. A fully open screen top will drop humidity below safe levels within hours in most homes.

Step 2: Drainage Layer

The drainage layer is the foundation of a successful vivarium. It sits at the base of the enclosure, below the substrate, and serves two critical purposes: it holds excess water away from the root zone and prevents anaerobic conditions that would kill your microfauna and plants.

How to build it

  1. Pour HydroBalls clay pellets into the bottom of the enclosure to a depth of 1.5–2 inches. For an 18×18×18 you will need approximately one 2.5lb bag.
  2. Cut a piece of drainage mesh to fit the footprint of the enclosure and lay it on top of the hydroballs. This barrier prevents substrate from falling into the drainage layer and mixing.
  3. Optional: add a standpipe (a small piece of PVC pipe cut to the height of your drainage layer) in one corner so you can siphon out excess water with a turkey baster if the drainage layer ever fills up.

The drainage layer should never be filled more than halfway with water during normal operation. If you can see water above the hydroballs through the glass, mist less frequently.

Step 3: Background (Optional but Recommended)

A vivarium background dramatically improves the look of the finished build and gives plants and bromeliads anchor points on the back and side walls. The most popular options are:

  • Cork bark flat background: The easiest option. Cork bark panels are cut to fit and siliconed to the back wall. They look natural, support moss growth, and plants can root into them over time.
  • Great Stuff foam background: Expanding foam carved and coated with coco fiber and silicone. Creates a three-dimensional cliff-face effect. More work but very impressive finished result.
  • No background: Perfectly acceptable, especially for a first build. Focus your budget on substrate and plants instead.

If using silicone for a background, use 100% silicone with no mold inhibitors (aquarium-safe silicone). Allow to cure fully — at least 48–72 hours with the enclosure ventilated — before adding any substrate or animals.

Step 4: Substrate — ABG Mix

ABG mix (Atlanta Botanical Garden substrate) is the gold standard for dart frog vivariums and has been for over 20 years. It supports live plant growth, holds humidity without waterlogging, and provides the right texture for dart frogs to forage and dig.

Standard ABG mix recipe

  • 2 parts tree fern fiber — provides structure and aeration
  • 2 parts long-fiber sphagnum moss — moisture retention
  • 1 part orchid bark (fine) — drainage and root aeration
  • 1 part horticultural charcoal — odor control and substrate biology
  • 1 part coco coir (Eco Earth) — fine texture filler

Mix all components dry in a large tub, then moisten with dechlorinated water until the mix holds together when squeezed but releases only a few drops — not a stream. Apply to a depth of 2.5–3 inches minimum. Deeper substrate supports healthier plant roots and a larger microfauna colony.

Step 5: Hardscape & Decor

Hardscape goes in before plants. Place your larger structural elements first, then work around them with planting.

Cork bark

Cork bark rounds placed on their sides create excellent hides — dart frogs use them constantly, especially during acclimatisation to a new enclosure. Cork bark is naturally antimicrobial, holds up well in high humidity, and develops a more natural appearance over time as moss begins to colonize it.

Leaf litter

Spread a layer of magnolia leaf litter or live oak leaves across the substrate surface. This does several things: it provides cover and visual security for the frogs, it creates microhabitats for springtails and isopods, it releases tannins that are beneficial to frog skin health, and it breaks down slowly to feed your microfauna. Replace with fresh leaf litter as it fully decomposes — usually every 3–6 months.

Bromeliads as hardscape

Bromeliads serve dual hardscape and planting roles. Place them before other plants, nestling the base into the substrate. For a breeding setup, position at least 2–3 bromeliads at different heights — the water-holding axils are prime egg deposition sites for many dart frog species including tinctorius and auratus.

Step 6: Planting

Plants are what transform a terrarium into a vivarium. Plant densely — a sparse vivarium looks worse and functions worse than a full one. Within 6–8 weeks, plants will have rooted and the enclosure will look like a miniature rainforest.

Best plants for dart frog vivariums

  • Selaginella (spikemoss): The single best groundcover for dart frog enclosures. Grows as a dense, bright green carpet across the substrate surface. Tolerates high humidity perfectly and spreads quickly once established. Essential for achieving the rainforest floor look.
  • Bromeliads (Neoregelia, Cryptanthus): Place at least 2–3 of varying sizes. The water cups formed by the leaf axils are natural frog hides and breeding sites.
  • Pothos / Epipremnum: Hardy climbing plant that grows quickly and fills vertical space. Roots readily in the substrate and can be trained up cork bark or a background. Nearly indestructible.
  • Peperomia: Wide variety of leaf shapes and textures. Most species thrive in vivarium conditions. Excellent mid-layer plants.
  • Ferns (Microsorum, Asplenium nidus): Hardy low-light ferns that thrive at substrate level. Good for filling in gaps around hardscape.
  • Jewel orchids (Ludisia, Macodes): Grown for their stunning iridescent foliage rather than flowers. Tolerate vivarium humidity well. A single plant adds significant visual interest.
  • Live moss (sheet moss, pillow moss): Apply sheet moss or pillow moss to the substrate surface, cork bark, and any background. Moss establishes slowly (4–8 weeks) but creates a lush finished look and is beloved by springtails.

Planting tips

  • Remove any nursery soil from plant roots before planting — it introduces pests and its nutrient density encourages the wrong types of organisms in a vivarium substrate.
  • Press plants firmly into the substrate. Loose planting leads to plants floating up as the substrate settles and gets misted.
  • Plant more densely than you think you need — plants will be trimmed back as they grow, but a sparse start looks and functions poorly.
  • Mist immediately after planting to help plants make contact with the substrate.

Microfauna — primarily springtails and isopods — are what make a bioactive vivarium function. Without them, waste and mold accumulate faster than plants can process, and the enclosure requires regular manual cleaning. With a healthy colony established before the frogs arrive, the vivarium is largely self-maintaining.

Springtails

Our live springtails in clay culture are the ideal starting colony. To introduce them, simply break apart the clay culture into small pieces and scatter across the substrate surface, particularly around the leaf litter and base of plants where they will find the most food and shelter. One culture is sufficient for an 18×18×18 to start — the colony will multiply rapidly once established.

Feed the springtail colony every 5–7 days with springtail food or a small amount of nutritional yeast scattered on the substrate surface. This is especially important during the 4–6 week establishment period before frogs are added — the springtails have no frog waste to feed on yet and need supplemental food to build up population density.

Isopods

Small isopod species (dwarf white, dwarf purple) make excellent companions to springtails in dart frog vivariums. They handle larger organic waste items that springtails cannot break down efficiently. Introduce a culture at the same time as your springtails if available. Avoid large isopod species — species like powder orange and powder blue can harm small dart frog species and eggs.

Step 8: Lighting & Lid

Set up your lighting and lid before the cycling period so the plants get consistent light from day one.

Lighting

Set a timer for 10–12 hours of light per day. Consistency matters — irregular photoperiods stress both frogs and plants.

Lid coverage

Cover 75–80% of the screen top with a piece of glass or acrylic. This traps humidity while still allowing gas exchange. You can have glass cut to size at any hardware store for a few dollars, or use a piece of acrylic from a craft store. Leave the remaining 20–25% open near the rear of the enclosure for airflow.

Step 9: Cycling Before Adding Frogs

Do not add frogs immediately. The vivarium needs 4–6 weeks to establish before it is ready for animals. During this period:

  • Weeks 1–2: Plants root in and begin new growth. Some leaf yellowing is normal as plants adjust. The springtail colony begins establishing. Mist once or twice daily to maintain 80–100% humidity.
  • Weeks 3–4: Active plant growth visible. Springtails should be clearly present across the substrate surface. Some mold may appear — this is normal and the springtails will eliminate it. Feed springtails weekly.
  • Weeks 5–6: The vivarium has stabilized. Humidity holds well between misting sessions, plants are rooted and growing, and springtail population is visibly healthy. The vivarium is now ready for frogs.

Before adding frogs, do a final check: temperature should be stable at 68–75°F, humidity between 80–100%, no standing water visible in the substrate above the drainage layer, and springtails actively foraging across the substrate surface.

A well-built bioactive vivarium requires far less maintenance than a non-bioactive setup. Here is what ongoing care looks like:
