Cleanup Crew for Bioactive Terrariums

A bioactive enclosure only works if something is breaking down the waste. That's the cleanup crew: isopods and springtails living in your substrate, eating mold, decaying plant matter, and animal waste before any of it becomes a problem. Get the crew right and your terrarium largely maintains itself. Get it wrong and you're the one doing the cleaning.

Springtails are the first line. Tiny, fast-reproducing, and relentless about mold, they work through the top layer of substrate and leaf litter. They're also small enough to be a food source, which makes them especially useful in dart frog and froglet enclosures.

Isopods do the heavier work. They break down larger organic matter, leaf litter, and waste that springtails can't handle, and they aerate the substrate as they burrow. Different species suit different setups, some prefer higher humidity, some tolerate drier conditions, and sizes range from tiny dwarf whites to large display species.

Most bioactive setups want both. Springtails handle mold and the fine material, isopods process everything bigger. Together they close the loop.

Cleanup crews work in almost any bioactive enclosure: dart frogs, geckos, snakes, tarantulas, isopod colonies of their own. If it has substrate and something living on it, it benefits from a cleanup crew.
