The Mertens’ Water Monitor is widely considered the most aquatic of all monitor lizards. Native to the riparian zones of Northern Australia, these monitors are a spectacular example of evolutionary adaptation. They feature nostrils positioned on the top of their snouts (similar to a crocodile) and a laterally compressed, paddle-like tail that allows them to navigate waterways with incredible speed and agility.
Aesthetically, Mertens’ are striking, with a dark charcoal or chocolate-brown base color speckled with countless tiny, cream-to-yellow ocelli (spots). In the monitor world, they are prized for their intelligence and active nature. While they require a significant investment in housing—needing both a large terrestrial area and a substantial water feature—their inquisitive "dog-like" curiosity makes them one of the most rewarding species for an advanced keeper to interact with. These captive-bred specimens are healthy, alert, and ready to become the crown jewel of a high-end monitor collection.

Please Note: Images are representative only. As juveniles, Mertens’ often show high-contrast spotting that matures into a complex, beautiful "stardust" pattern. Unless marked "Exact Animal," you will receive a healthy, well-started specimen.
