The drainage sponge is the foundation of a no-soil bioactive terrarium. Instead of a traditional substrate layer that has to be replaced every couple of years and lives or dies on drainage, this sponge gives you a clean, lightweight base that drains freely and lasts for years.

We use 35 PPI specifically. It drains well without being so open that it holds nothing, which is exactly what you want under a dart frog build. Water passes through to your drainage layer below instead of sitting in the sponge, so you avoid the anaerobic conditions, mold, and smell that come with poor drainage.

Why keepers are switching to a no-soil build:

  • No substrate to replace. Our own no-soil terrariums have run four years and counting with no teardown.
  • No drainage anxiety. Water drains straight through instead of pooling.
  • No mold, no smell. The most common substrate problems simply don't happen.
  • Easy access. With no drilled holes or plumbed hoses, you can lift a corner and siphon out excess water any time, even with your frogs in the tank.

How to use it: The sheet comes oversized so you can cut it to fit your enclosure. Use a fresh, sharp blade for a clean edge. Lay it about one inch thick over an egg crate or clay ball (LECA) drainage layer, then top with leaf litter and sphagnum moss for a natural forest-floor look. Plants root right into the sphagnum, no soil needed.

Pair it with our cleanup crew and no-soil plant packages for a complete, self-sustaining setup.

Size: 20" x 20" x 1", 35 PPI. Trim to fit any enclosure.
