The Bird Poop Mossy Frog (Theloderma asperum), also known as the Pied Warty Frog, is one of nature’s most clever examples of "mimicry" camouflage. As its common name suggests, this small arboreal species has evolved to look exactly like bird droppings to avoid predation. Its striking contrast of snowy white and deep chocolate brown, paired with its bumpy, warty skin texture, allows it to sit out in plain sight on a leaf or branch while remaining completely ignored by hungry birds and reptiles.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, these frogs are much smaller than their cousins, the Vietnamese Mossy Frogs, making them perfect candidates for smaller "nano" bioactive setups. They are nocturnal and spend their nights hunting small insects among the canopy. In a terrarium, they are hardy and fascinating to observe, especially when they find their favorite "hiding spot" in the open. For the keeper who appreciates the weird, the wacky, and the wonders of evolution, the Bird Poop Mossy Frog is a must-have conversation piece.
