Often affectionately called the "Hippo Frog" due to its wide, flattened body and comical expression, the Budgett’s Frog (Lepidobatrachus laevis) is one of the most charismatic and unusual amphibians in the hobby. Originally hailing from the Gran Chaco region of South America, these highly aquatic frogs are famous for their oversized heads, tiny eyes, and a mouth that seems to span the entire width of their body.
Budgett’s Frogs are full of personality—though they are known for their "grumpy" demeanor and unique defensive scream if startled. They are aggressive ambush predators that spend most of their time submerged in water, waiting for a meal to swim by. Unlike many other frogs, they are highly intelligent and observant of their surroundings. They require an aquatic setup with shallow water, plenty of hiding spots, and specialized filtration to keep their environment pristine. For the keeper who wants an animal that is truly "weird and wonderful," the Budgett’s Frog is an absolute must-have.
