Our Drosophila melanogaster cultures are the perfect staple feeder for dart frogs, micro-geckos, spiderlings, and small amphibians. These are wingless (apterous), meaning they lack the biological ability to fly—keeping your feeders in the enclosure and out of your kitchen.
Why Choose D. melanogaster?
Faster Yields: They reproduce significantly faster than D. hydei, providing more food in less time.
Mite Resistant: Their rapid life cycle allows them to outcompete common mite issues that plague slower-breeding species.
Universal Size: At approximately 1/16", they are small enough for hatchlings but nutritious enough for adults.
Beginner Friendly: This variety is widely considered the easiest and most "forgiving" fruit fly to culture.
Important: This is a FRESH Culture
To ensure you receive the longest possible production life, these cultures are just started (seeded) before shipping.
Not Ready for Immediate Feeding: You must allow 7–14 days for the culture to begin producing new flies.
Adult Flies: You may notice dead adult flies upon arrival. This is completely normal; these are the "seed" flies used to start the colony. Look for active larvae (maggots) moving through the media—these are your future feeders!
Production Timeline: High yields depend on your home temperature:
76–78°F: 5–7 days to hatch.
70–74°F: 7–9 days to hatch.
Below 68°F: May take 14+ days.
Pro-Tips for Maximum Yield
For the best results, keep your cultures between 75–78°F at 60% humidity. If your home is dry or cool, placing cultures in a ventilated bin with a low-heat seedling mat can significantly boost your production speed.
