Add a crown jewel to your bioactive collection with the legendary Oophaga histrionica "Redhead - Small Form". Originating from the humid, isolated rainforest regions of Colombia, this highly sought-after morph is a favorite among experienced hobbyists for its striking visual appearance and complex social behaviors. True to its name, this locale features a brilliant, fiery reddish-orange head that contrasts beautifully against a deep brown-to-black body accented by intricate yellow-orange spotting and reticulation.
As a "large obligate egg-feeder," Oophaga histrionica possesses some of the most fascinating parental instincts in the animal kingdom. After eggs are laid, the female will transport individual tadpoles up into water-filled bromeliad axils or film canisters, returning every few days to feed her developing young exclusively with infertile food eggs. Because males are highly vocal and fiercely territorial, this species is best housed strictly as a single, well-matched pair in a heavily planted canopy environment.
Highlights & Features
- Breathtaking Aposematic Coloration: Features a brilliant crimson-orange head set against high-contrast dark body markings, creating a dramatic focal point in lush setups.
- Fascinating Obligate Breeders: Exhibits incredible parental behaviors, with females actively raising and feeding their own tadpoles in a bioactive cycle.
- Highly Vocal and Active: Males feature a distinctive, loud call used to claim territory and charm their mates.
- Arboreal Explorers: Loves vertical climbing terrain, spending plenty of time moving along elevated hardscape, large branches, and broad plant leaves.
